The Children’s Book

The Children’s Book by A.S. Byatt6280379

RATING: ★★★★★ (5/5!)

I ploughed through this amazing tome! Ploughing makes it seem like it was laborious, so maybe that a poor word choice… The way Byatt interweaves her vast knowledge of history with the fictitious narratives of her characters is so very unique and intriguing. She does an excellent job of dispelling the erroneous stereotype of the Victorians as chaste beings. There is so much to take in–politically, historically, emotionally, artistically/aesthetically– in this novel. In addition to the historical narrative, Byatt also does a wonderful examination of the Victorian obsession with childhood/’children’s’ tales, etc. interspersing the linear character narrative with her own highly symbolic fairy tales/yarns. I cannot say enough good things about this book.
