School For Love

School for Love by Olivia Manning

RATING: ★★★★★ (5/5 stars!)

A novel beautiful in its simple prose. I wish there was more literature that focused on this period and location– the Middle East is often in our headlines today, but most people have little or no historical context in which to place current events. Manning deftly captures the scene of Jerusalem in the 1940s, as experienced through the adolescent Felix. A lovely coming of age story in the truest sense. Manning distances the reader just enough to avoid sentimentality but draws us in enough to see things through the eyes of this naive young boy as he wades through increasingly adult feelings. A wonderful brief tale with exceptional and refreshingly unique analysis of how the young judge the world and vice versa.
